Laminating
also sealing in
Under laminating or sealing one understands the two-sided laminating a material with foil. Sealed-objects are optimally protected against dirt and moisture. Even the hygiene standards of medical technology and pharmaceutical sectors can thus be observed. The surface of the lamination can be designed differently; possible are brilliant gloss, matt or non-reflective surface structures.
Technical background
In lamination, a double-sided full-surface bond between print product and the film is made in a continuous process under pressure and heat. There are different thicknesses of films mainly made of polyester used. The total lamination diameter can be the final product between 0.052 ... 0.500 mm plus the thickness of paper. The variable combination possible between film thickness and basis weight of the paper allows both flexible, yet rollable, as well as rigid and stable end.
Possible additional equipment at the laminating are: variable circumferential rim or rimless processing, transparent reinforced binding edge, round or square corners, contours punches, hole, eyelet, Wire-O bonds and various security features, besides also attached labels.
Effect
The optical effect during lamination depends on whether a glossy or a matte film was used. Brilliant films enhance the effect of printing inks by their brilliant surface, matt films reduce light reflection on the surface by their slightly roughened structure and thus provide a more comfortable readability of the printed image. The color effect that the viewer perceives is, however, mitigated somewhat the same time, it creates the typical noble, matt surface impression.
The lamination protects the surface from abrasion, dirt and moisture. Since the paper is completely sealed from both sides, the protective effect of the printed material is optimally protected from moisture with this finishing technique.
Application possibilities
The lamination is very rare in the classical book production. Their main area of application is in maps and plans of all kinds, to be protected from the weather. Also durable and kink-resistant file sheets can be produced (office supplies), etc. E.g. for a sample case. Another area of application: menus, which often come in contact with beverages.
Limitations
For lamination papers with a basis weight of between 115 ... 350g/m2. The best lamination results bring coated paper, cast-coated are optimal. Uncoated paper although lamination surfaces, but their surface structure is characterized by the lamination on the sheet from. This may look interesting, but also in many cases unattractive, which is why a previous test lamination is recommended in case of doubt in order to make a judgment.
Costs
In most processing service, the material costs for the laminating pouches are often relatively high.
