Debossing
Debossing is the partial transformation of a material under the influence of pressure and possibly temperature. Due to the application of a binder’s die there is a compression of the material at the motive parts. Debossing can be done as goffering or hot foil stamping.
Technical background
With the help of a binder’s die is a partial transformation of the material carried out. As binder’s tool you can use a binder’s die or binder’s roller which are both relief dies. Because of the use of a specific pressure is the surface of the material on one side transformed while on the other side it stays plan. This side lies on a plan base or impression cylinder. The rotative debossing is mostly used for areal debossing of binder’s cloth or brochure card covers. The grade of compression depends on the materials ability to compress and the used pressure of the binder’s die.
Effect
Debossing allows a subtle finishing. In case of partial debossing it is possible to accentuate ornamental elements in an area or put a pattern on a whole area. Motives seem plastic and you can feel the difference between the layers.
Application possibilities
Debossing is possible on coated and uncoated materials. It’s also no problem to do it on varnished or laminated, flocked or textile materials. It’s only difficult to deboss extremely structured surfaces because you can’t compensate for the whole pattern.
Debossing is used for book and magazine covers, greeting cards, tags and boxes for cosmetics.
Limitations
Limitations are defined by the compressibility of the material and it’s surface structure. It’s very difficult (impossible) to transfer fine elements on a rough surface.
Costs
The stamping tool costs which raise the unit cost particularly with small editions clearly are to be considered.
